I recently came across an article that encapsulated something I’ve been feeling for a while now, with regards to social sharing mechanisms (“Like”, “Tweet this” etc…). I’ve used them a lot lately on client sites but I increasingly feel the performance, aesthetic and usability costs outweigh any supposed gains.
Social media buttons are not a social media strategy, even though they’re often sold that way. Excellent content, serious networking and constant human engagement is the way to build your profile. Adding those sleazy buttons won’t achieve anything. Social media is not easy — there is no simple trick.
